The Gerontological Society of Serbia will, on October 12 and 13, 2022, organise the eleventh international gerontological congress, in Belgrade. The topic of the XI International Gerontology Congress is “Gerontology: Opportunities and Perspectives in the Post COVID-19 World”.
Gerontological Society of Serbia (GDS), which is a scientific-professional, social-humanitarian and non-profit organization founded in 1973 following the initiative of the most competent experts in the field of geriatrics and social gerontology. The Gerontological Society of Serbia publishes the journal Gerontology, and this journal has gained the status of a national scientific journal and since 2010 it has been published twice a year. This is the only scientific journal that covers the field of gerontology and geriatrics in Serbia and the region. The Gerontological Society of Serbia has been a member of the HumanaS network since 2004.
During almost half a century of work of the Gerontological Society of Serbia, one of the most important activities is the organization of International Gerontological Congresses, which are organized every four years.
In the past two years, the COVID-19 pandemic has played the role of a magnifying glass through which we have a better understanding of society’s readiness to face major changes and emergencies and the role of the older population in such times. We have seen a “perfect storm” of risk factors for elder abuse, but also a stage on which the paternalistic attitude towards older persons is reflected in protection measures that sometimes went beyond the limits set by human rights. Depriving older people of the right to decide for themselves while acting in the name of their protection has often been accepted as covert application of force. The COVID-19 pandemic should be a wake-up call to involve older persons in emergency response planning, budgeting, allocation of roles and activities, using their capacities and resources. We owe older persons space for them to express their needs and make recommendations. We hope that our congress will make a significant contribution to the change in thinking and acting in the right direction.
